Bedroom artists, they come and go. Most of them drown in the mass, some of them gain some recognition, but only few actually stand out of the mass and bring you something so beautiful and spot-on that you don’t know exactly what is happening to you. Youth Lagoon belongs to that last category.

The 22-year-old Boise-resident that goes by the name of Trevor Powers in the daily life made a 40-minute dream. On his debut full-length “The Year of Hibernation” he shares some personal stories with the listener; stories about the life of a teenager – and most are quite sad. His sound reminiscences the sound of Perfume Genius: it drowns in lo-fi, a dreamy reverb and a sad feeling overall. But Youth Lagoon takes that melancholy sad pop to the next level by adding a touch of rhythm. Don’t get me wrong: you won’t end up dancing or nodding your head to his music, but there’s definitely a well-crafted pace behind his music. All of them start quite dreamy as Trevor commences his story, but after a minute or two the bass kicks in and speeds up the pace as the story develops. Instead of relying on the dreamy soundscape like most bedroom-artists do, Youth Lagoon distinguishes himself this way. He takes the best out of both worlds – combine that with his melancholic, romantic lyrics and a new star is born.
